Pedro Garcia Arredondo, Chief of police in Guatemala at the time of the abduction of Serge Berten and the assassination of Ward Capiau and Walter Voordeckers was convicted for his part in the kidnapping of a student during the Guatemalan civil war in the 80ies.
Guatebelga advocates and supports the pursuit of similar Guatemalan officials before the Belgian courts. The Belgian Genocide law (or what remains of it) in connection with the crimes against Ward, Walter and Serge enables investigating magistrate Burm and the Federal prosecution.
Since these crimes are considered crimes against humanity, they are not subject to any satute of limitations. It is however necessary to prosecute the perpetrators while they are still alive.
